16 May

My brothers son just graduated high school. It is an Honor that he has chosen to begin his fight for our country at the end of this month. Please keep them in prayer. A family gathering is planned but what is an appropriate gift???

If you are religious hand him a bible and right messages inside for him. When he goes to BOOT Camp the Drill Instructor can not take that away from him. Other then that you can get him a lap top or MP3 Player for when he gets out of boot camp he can have some electronics to play with because he will need all those in his next travels ahead. But the best gift will be your love and attention. Lots of letters, NOT Cookies sent to boot camp. Best of Luck

Going in to the military is a huge step. I would buy him some new sneakers (always needed), a scrap book with family/friends pics to remind him of home, ipod, anything for his barracks room that he might need, gas card, or money! Good luck to him!

Get him a calling card so he can call home whenever he wants to.

We went through this same thing last year when my oldest son graduated from high school and left for boot camp two weeks later. What can you get them when they won’t be able to use it for 3 months? The suggestions for the bible, the iPod and the computer are great ones. They are also allowed to wear a religious medallion. Phone cards are a good idea for when they leave boot and go to the next stage of their training.

Marine Corps boot camp is totally different than any of the other services. They do not get to call home, they can not receive packages, they take only the clothes on their body when they leave for boot. Anything that they might need while they are there will be avaliable to them. Make sure to go to boot camp graduation. It’s a wonderful experience.

Congratulations and good luck to your nepohew, as well as the rest of your family. Welcome to the Marine Corps family!

honestly, the best gift i can think of is probably going to be a engraved k-bar. this should be a keepsake and not to be used in the field. it would mean a lot to him and he will respect what it stands for. trust my words, i have been there. deployed twice, oif 1, 2, and3. be sure to tell him that if he needs to talk about what he is about to do, he should feel free to e-mail me and we will talk.
