Godly men in the Old Testament did. Such as Joshua I think, and some people in 1 and 2 Kings.

Get from the library “The Weight of Glory” by CS Lewis and get from it the essay “Why I am not a Pacifist.” Or anywhere else you can find the essay. I believe it is the definitive Christian answer to the question of military service.

The Bible teaches that the physical kingdoms of men and the spiritual kingdom of God are two distinct entities – and that self-defense at times is necessary for self-preservation. It’s cold blooded murder that is prohibited
Jhn 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

The Biblical God COMMANDS his followers to go to war, and to kidnap, enslave, torture, rape, and kill people.

In the Old Testament we have David and Samson.
Now, in the Roman Army a centurion was the commander of approximately 100 soldiers. The New Testament mentions several centurions as having faith and glorifying God.
In the New Testament we have Jesus speaking of the centurion in Matthew Chapter 8:10-11
10When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.
11And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven.
Again we have a centurion:
Luke 23:47
Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man.
Still yet another centurion
Acts 10:22
And they said, Cornelius the centurion, a just man, and one that feareth God, and of good report among all the nation of the Jews, was warned from God by an holy angel to send for thee into his house, and to hear words of thee.

God’s principles have not changed. Even though He may change how we worship Him, his precepts do not and can not change. He was the one who created Israel and our government is fashioned after the Israel of old. He has always commanded that we protect our wives and homes as well as having a standing army to protect the nation. God has given to the government the right of capital punishment and that is in using the military, also. Here are some scriptures to help you in your debate.
Numbers 1:2-3; Judges 3:2; Exodus 22:2; Deut. 20:1-4; and about us keeping our families safe, Nehemiah 4:14
Hope that helps.

Jesus, in John 18:26, before Pilate, said for Christians,
““My kingdom is no part of this world. If my kingdom were part of this world, my attendants would have fought that I should not be delivered up to the Jews. But, as it is, my kingdom is not from this source.”
Jesus also told Christians, at Matthew 5:43-48 in the Sermon on the Mount,
““YOU heard that it was said, ‘You must love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 However, I say to YOU: Continue to love YOUR enemies and to pray for those persecuting YOU; 45 that YOU may prove yourselves sons of YOUR Father who is in the heavens, since he makes his sun rise upon wicked people and good and makes it rain upon righteous people and unrighteous. 46 For if YOU love those loving YOU, what reward do YOU have? Are not also the tax collectors doing the same thing? 47 And if YOU greet YOUR brothers only, what extraordinary thing are YOU doing? Are not also the people of the nations doing the same thing? 48 YOU must accordingly be perfect, as YOUR heavenly Father is perfect. ”
If you love your enemy, it’s pretty hard to shoot him.
Jesus also said about real Christians,
” I am giving YOU a new commandment, that YOU love one another; just as I have loved YOU, that YOU also love one another. 35 By this all will know that YOU are my disciples, if YOU have love among yourselves.” ”
Since he also told Christians to “make disciples of all the nations,” (Matthew 28:19, 20) then Christians would be in all the nations. If two nations went to war, how could the Christians fight on both sides of the same war, killing each other, and still do what Jesus said, “have love among yourselves?”
No time, got to go, but please also see 2 Corinthians 10:3-5, which says,
“For though we walk in the flesh, we do not wage warfare according to [what we are in the] flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not fleshly, but powerful by God for overturning strongly entrenched things. 5 For we are overturning reasonings and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God; and we are bringing every thought into captivity to make it obedient to the Christ…”
These scriptures show that Christians are under a completely different set of rules than Joshua or King David. This change was foretold by God through the prophet Jeremiah in Jeremiah 31:31-32:
“31Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
32Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD: ”
That is why God’s instructions are so different for Christians now. And even back in Joshua and David’s day, they were only to fight if they were attacked, or fight to destroy those nations in Canaan which, archaeology shows, practiced child sacrifice.
Best regards,
Mike
